Resident Advisor / Counselor for International Teen Camp (male) - Legacy International - Bedford, VA

Seeking one more dynamic “practical idealist” to join our summer team, working with international teens.

Each summer since 1979, a dynamic community is created at the

Global Youth Village

that emphasizes experiential learning and challenges young people to turn intercultural theory into practical action. This year 50+ teens and staff from around the world will participate. 2016 highlights include youth leaders from Algeria and Egypt.

Workshops address issues concerning young people today, such as war and peace, arts & culture, distribution of world resources, prejudice, environmental concerns, and other social pressures. Cultural programming and cooperative living help participants learn to respect differences and discover similarities that transcend cultural, religious, and political barriers.

Positions open

(as of July 5):
Cabin counselor / program specialist

(male)

Dates:
as soon as possible

till August 16, 2016. (flexable beginning and ending date options)

Global Youth Village counselors are diverse in culture and youth work experience. Each cabin is staffed with one counselor and is home to 10 participants. Cabin life serves as an important foundation to the Village experience by fostering an accepting and secure environment.

Counselors work closely with one another to promote cultural sensitivity, foster personal development and integration, and to ensure safety. These “big brothers” and “big sisters” are role models of participation, cooperation, care, and respect, and are responsible for guiding youth through their GYV experience of self discovery, improved communication skills, participation in activities and peer mediation, all which contribute to a deeper understanding of one’s self and how personal actions affect the world around them.

Counselors fill many roles at the Village. They not only live in the cabin with the youth. They share meals with them, conduct cabin meetings, plan cabin activities, etc. In the afternoon, counselors teach activities such as swimming, sports, studio arts, and nature activities, as well as assist in planning and implementing evening programs. (Options are explored during interviews.)

This position is residential (includes housing and meals, plus a modest salary).
