Social Media Manager - Legacy International / Global Youth Village - Washington, DC

Legacy International seeks a Social Media Manager based in the Washington, DC metro area to join our team for 5 months of engaging work with exceptional teens and adults from over 15 countries. (Mar. 28 -Aug. 19, 2016)

Responsibilities : Design and manage the quality and presentation of information on social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube), coordinating media coverage, and fulfilling Legacy’s development and communications goals. Integrate overall communication strategies across programs helping Legacy convey a consistent, positive message while monitoring followers and alerting Legacy’s development team of potential partnerships. Oversee photo documentation and collaborate with the participants and project teams on blog creation.


The Social Media Manager follows and documents three major programs supported by the U.S. Department of State; administered by Legacy International:


Secretary’s Award for Emerging Youth Leaders – a new high profile program wherein Secretary Kerry awards 10 emerging global leaders (ages 18-24) for their efforts to promote justice and citizen participation. April 12 to May 7. You will be fully embedded with this program team, living on-site during program delivery. You will also play secondary role as a trainer and escort.


Professional Fellows Program: A capacity-building and professional development initiative that serves individuals working in civil society in Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco . May 6 to June 8. Your role in this team is solely social media.


TechGirls is a three-week U.S. Department of State initiative and exchange program designed to inspire young women from the Middle East and North Africa to pursue higher education and careers in technology through hands-on skills development. It is administered by Legacy International in partnership with iDTech Camps. July 8 to August 4. You will be fully embedded with this program team, living on-site during program delivery. You will also play secondary role as a trainer and escort.


Between Programs – compile photos, develop and implement a social media engagement scheme for program alumni, assist in report writing. Provide social media training to other Legacy staff members or youth groups such as the American Youth Leadership Program Cyprus , Arabic Language Institute , Saudi Young Leader’s Exchange Program .


Secondary Roles: During program delivery, the Legacy team works together to fill a wide variety of needs: event/meeting set-up, communications with program providers, assisting with logistics and supervision (procuring supplies, getting food, getting laundry done, errands).

Job location: Only candidates residing in the Washington DC area will be considered. Occasionally, the Social Media Manager will travel to Legacy’s Bedford headquarters for team meetings and joint planning. Some regional travel also required. During program delivery (when embedded with a specific program) or when in Bedford, lodging, food and travel costs are covered.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous experience in marketing, public relations or communications.


Demonstrated use and comfort navigating Web 2.0 sites and tools, including blogs, social networks, video and photo sharing, etc., (personal or professional) with solid understanding of the internet and social media marketing best practices.


Excellent written and oral communication skills.


Fearless attitude towards technology and a willingness to learn.


Demonstrated enthusiasm and strong social skills when interacting with online audiences.


Passion for socially responsible use of technology and gender empowerment.


Knowledge of digital storytelling.


Prior international travel a plus but not required


Photo documentation skills preferred


Video documentation and editing preferred but not required


Essential Functions


Ability to effectively communicate with youth and staff, and to provide necessary instruction and training


Ability to communicate to youth and staff the safety regulations and emergency procedures in case of an emergency (during daily programs, in hotel or on public transport)


Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to area


Cognitive and communication abilities for large, complex event management


Ability to operate essential office equipment needed to carry out responsibilities (i.e. telephone, digital camera, computer, photocopy machine)


Ability to move furnishings (tables, chairs) & lift supplies up to 25 pounds.
